VMI Baseball senior first baseman Grayson Fitzwater was named to the Baseball America Week 4 National College Team of the Week, according to a March 10 announcement from the program.
Fitzwater’s selection marks his first appearance on the national team and is also a first for any Keydet in program history. The recognition comes after he was named Southern Conference Player of the Week, adding another honor to his season.
The Baseball America honor roll features one standout at each position, including a top-performing two-way player and four pitchers. It also includes a designated hitter spot, which serves as a wild card for an outstanding performer at any position. Fitzwater earned this wild card spot following his performance against Western Illinois last weekend.
During that series, Fitzwater posted a .727 batting average with eight hits, two doubles, four home runs, nine RBIs, and six runs scored. He drew seven walks and stole two bases. In Friday’s doubleheader alone, he went six-for-seven with four home runs and set a new VMI career home run record with his 47th homer. Between games three and four, he was intentionally walked five times but still managed to get a hit in each game.
The Keydets swept Western Illinois in four games and extended their winning streak to five games. VMI now holds a 14-2 record as they prepare for their next matchup against Norfolk State before hosting Cornell for a three-game series.
