Staunton City Council will publicly dedicate the brick walkway that runs along Lewis Creek near Bruce A. Elder Antique and Classic Automobiles on New Street on Thursday, June 9 at 5:15 p.m. The sidewalk will be named “Elder’s Way” in honor of the successful businessman, member of the Staunton Economic Development Authority and beloved former councilmember who passed away on February 2, 2021.

The dedication will include remarks by Mayor Andrea Oakes, the unveiling of two granite plates installed at either end of the sidewalk between South New Street and the pedestrian bridge and comments by family members, councilmembers and other guests.

City Council honored Mr. Elder with a proclamation at the regular City Council meeting on March 25, 2021 where it was noted that he was a “tireless warrior for small business, historic preservation, the disenfranchised, the downtrodden and the marginalized, regularly listening to and assisting anyone who needed a helping hand, an ear, a blanket, advice, a job, food or money.” City Council then passed a resolution naming the brick walkway “Elder’s Way” in honor of Elder at the August 26, 2021 regular meeting.

Attendees can park in the public parking lot adjacent to the intersection of Mill Street and Greenville Avenue. Questions can be directed to 540-332-3812.
