Senior first baseman Grayson Fitzwater was named Southern Conference Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, according to a March 16 announcement from the conference.
This recognition marks Fitzwater’s second career weekly honor and makes him the first VMI Keydet to earn back-to-back SoCon Player of the Week awards since Justin Starke achieved the feat in April 2021.
Fitzwater, who was named Preseason Player of the Year, helped lead VMI to a 3-1 record over the past week. The team secured its first road win against Norfolk State and won a series over Cornell. During this stretch, Fitzwater posted a .583 batting average with seven hits in twelve at-bats, including three doubles and two home runs. He also scored five runs, drove in six RBIs, walked seven times, and stole three bases without being caught.
Currently on a nine-game hitting streak that began on March 1, Fitzwater is batting .409 for the season. He leads his team with eight home runs and twenty-five walks. His on-base plus slugging percentage stands at an impressive 1.458.
Looking ahead, Fitzwater and the Keydets are set to play Radford in a three-game series this weekend. The series will begin Friday in Radford at 6 p.m., continue Saturday at VMI’s home field at 2 p.m., and conclude Sunday back in Radford at 1 p.m. Both Friday and Saturday games will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
