Senior first baseman Grayson Fitzwater was named Southern Conference Player of the Week, the conference announced on March 9. This marks Fitzwater’s first weekly honor and is also the first such recognition for any VMI Keydet this season.

The award highlights Fitzwater’s standout weekend against Western Illinois, where he delivered a strong offensive showing. According to the announcement, Fitzwater recorded eight hits, including two doubles and four home runs, while driving in nine runs and scoring six times. He also drew seven walks and stole two bases during the series.

In Friday’s doubleheader, Fitzwater went six-for-seven at the plate with four home runs, five runs scored, and seven RBIs. His fourth home run in game two was his 47th career homer, setting a new VMI career home run record. Between games three and four of the series, he was intentionally walked five times but still managed to get a hit in each contest.

The Keydets swept Western Illinois in a four-game series and extended their winning streak to five games. The team now holds a 14-2 record as they prepare for an upcoming matchup against Norfolk State before hosting Cornell for a three-game series this weekend.

This recognition adds to eight total conference weekly awards earned by Keydets players during Sam Roberts’ tenure as head coach.
