James Madison University defeated Temple University 16-10 in an American Conference women’s lacrosse game at Sentara Park on March 28. The Dukes were propelled by a strong third quarter, scoring eight goals to secure the win.

The result is significant as it gives James Madison its second conference victory of the season, improving their record to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The win was highlighted by Kaitlyn Carney’s career-high seven goals, while Peyton Root set her own career mark with seven assists and added two goals. Olivia Matthews contributed three goals and an assist for her second hat trick of the season.

On defense, Maddie Weybrecht led with two caused turnovers and a ground ball. Abigail Beattie started in goal for James Madison, making ten saves with a .500 save percentage. For Temple, Amelia Wright scored five goals and Riley Horoshko made five saves over sixty minutes.

The game began with James Madison taking an early lead before Temple tied it up in the second quarter. However, JMU closed out the half ahead after a late run led by Matthews. In the decisive third quarter, Root assisted Carney three times as JMU dominated draws by a margin of ten to two.

Carney’s seven-goal performance is tied for the second most in a single game in program history for James Madison. Root’s six assists also tie for second most all-time at JMU.
