James Madison women’s basketball falls to Kentucky in NCAA First Round

James Madison University’s women’s basketball team lost to Kentucky 71-56 in the NCAA First Round at Hope Coliseum on March 21. The Dukes were unable to overcome a strong first quarter by the Wildcats, who outscored them 32-10.

The game was significant as it marked the end of James Madison’s season and highlighted the team’s resilience after a difficult start. Despite trailing early, the Dukes outscored Kentucky over the final three quarters but could not close the gap.

Peyton McDaniel ended her college career with 15 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. She leaves James Madison ranked third in all-time points with 2,325 and fourth in rebounds with 1,025. Ashanti Barnes led the Dukes in scoring for this game with 16 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Freshman Grace McDonough contributed nine points and six rebounds in her first NCAA Tournament appearance, while Zakiya Stephenson added six points and three steals.

Kentucky was led by Tonie Morgan’s 18 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. Clara Strack recorded a double-double with 14 rebounds and 10 points. Amelia Haslett scored 14 points by making four three-pointers, while Jordan Obi provided support off the bench with 12 points and five rebounds.

James Madison finishes its season with an overall record of 26-9. The team now holds an all-time record of eight wins and fourteen losses in NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship play.
