Mark Obenshain, a Republican elected to the Virginia State Senate in 2024 representing the state’s 2nd Senate district, used his social media platform on January 19, 2026, to critique several policy positions of Governor Spanberger.

In his first post at 21:28 UTC, Obenshain commented on the governor’s energy initiative: “Governor Spanberger’s first concrete “affordability” initiative is to rejoin REGI— the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative — that will drive up utility bills to subsidize green energy projects.”

Shortly after, at 21:32 UTC, he addressed healthcare policy and federal subsidies: “On healthcare, Gov Spanberger wants to double down on the Obamacare subsidies— the same ones that President Obama said we would not need by now if we passed the bill.”

In a third post at 21:34 UTC, Obenshain referenced recent federal events and political dynamics: “Now she’s complaining about the federal government shutdown last fall – showing an appalling lack of gratitude for the efforts of congressional Democrats to help her campaign! “

Obenshain assumed office in Virginia’s state senate following his election in 2024. He succeeded Mamie Locke as representative of the state’s 2nd Senate district.
