Mark Obenshain, a Republican state senator representing Virginia’s 2nd Senate district since 2024, has raised concerns on social media regarding recent actions by Senate Democrats related to a gerrymandering constitutional amendment.
On January 22, 2026, Obenshain posted: “Senate Dems concede that they have violated Va law by failing to give proper public notice of their gerrymandering constitutional amendment. This pm (ironically with no notice to the public) they moved to repeal the problematic law – retroactive to 1971!”
The following day, he reiterated his position in another post dated January 23, 2026: “Plain English: VA Dems advanced a gerrymandering amendment 4 days B4 Election Day, making it impossible to comply with law requiring public notice 3 mos B4 the House election. Now they admit the problem — and their fix is to repeal it retroactive to 1971. It’s abuse of power.”
In addition to his comments on legislative procedure, Obenshain also shared about engaging with students during FFA Day at the General Assembly Building on January 23, stating: “FFA Day is one of my favorites at the GAB! I enjoyed meeting with these student leaders from my district who are learning about the legislative process on their visit to the Capitol.”
Obenshain succeeded Mamie Locke as senator for Virginia’s 2nd district after being elected in 2024.
