Maryland’s women’s lacrosse team, ranked third nationally, defeated James Madison University 13-6 at SECU Stadium on Saturday. The win keeps Maryland undefeated this season with a 7-0 record, while JMU drops to 2-4.
Jordan Peterson was the leading scorer for the Dukes, contributing two goals. Payton Root added one goal and two assists. On defense, Maddie Weybrecht recorded five ground balls and caused a turnover. Goalkeeper Abigail Beattie made eight saves, marking her highest save total in an away game this year.
For Maryland, Kristen Shanahan scored six goals and provided one assist. Lauren Lapointe also made an impact with three goals and one assist. JJ Suriano played in goal for the Terrapins, registering 10 saves and achieving a .625 save percentage.
The match began with Maryland quickly establishing a 3-0 lead by the middle of the first quarter. JMU responded with consecutive goals from Peterson and Root but could not maintain momentum as Maryland regained control to end the quarter ahead by three points.
In the second quarter, Maryland extended its lead further before Aly Yee-Jenkins scored JMU’s only goal of the period. The Terps answered just before halftime to go up by five.
During the third quarter, Maryland continued to dominate both scoring and draw controls, outscoring JMU 3-1 in that frame.
Early in the fourth quarter, Brianna Mennella found the net for JMU but Maryland maintained their advantage throughout. The Dukes managed another late goal but were unable to close the gap.
James Madison will return home next week to play Liberty University in Lynchburg on Wednesday, March 11 at 4 p.m., with coverage available on ESPN+.
