VMI Wrestling senior Ryan Vigil was named the 33 seed in the 165-pound bracket for the 2026 NCAA Wrestling Championship, according to a March 11 announcement by the NCAA.

Vigil’s qualification comes after a standout performance at the Southern Conference Tournament, where he won the conference title and was named Most Outstanding Wrestler. He achieved this by going undefeated through four matches and upsetting both the nation’s No. 24 wrestler and SoCon’s top seed. Notably, Vigil became the first wrestler to win a Southern Conference title as an eight seed.

In his opening match at the national tournament, Vigil will face Cody Walsh from Drexel, who holds the 32 seed. The winner of that bout will advance to compete against Mitchell Mesenbrink from Penn State, currently ranked as the nation’s leader at 165 pounds. If Vigil does not win his first match, he will move into the Wrestlebacks bracket and could potentially face Thomas Snipes from The Citadel, whom he previously wrestled in his first round of the SoCon Championship.

Vigil’s initial matches are scheduled for Thursday, March 14. Fans can find more information on VMIKeydets.com or follow VMI Athletics on social media for updates.

The broader significance of Vigil’s achievement lies in his unprecedented run from an eight seed to conference champion, highlighting both individual perseverance and competitive unpredictability within collegiate wrestling.
