VMI Baseball achieved an 8-5 victory over George Washington on March 24, marking head coach Sam Roberts’ 100th career coaching win. The game took place at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park in Arlington, Virginia.
Roberts became the fourth coach in VMI program history to reach the milestone and did so faster than any of his predecessors. With this win, the Keydets improved their record to 20-4 and secured their fourth consecutive season with at least 20 wins.
During the game, VMI scored eight runs on eleven hits. Four players—Grayson Fitzwater, Bradley Garner, Ayden Schnarrs, and JW Kohlmeyer—had multi-hit performances. Fitzwater and Gabe Jenkins each contributed two runs batted in (RBIs), while Schnarrs scored twice. Hunter Sip tossed three innings with three strikeouts for his fourth victory of the season. Tyler Bassett faced four batters and struck out three, while Justin Spiegel made his first appearance of the year by pitching a scoreless first inning with two strikeouts. Buddy Baker earned the save after finishing the last inning with two strikeouts.
The scoring began in the first inning when Fitzwater doubled in two runs for VMI. Although George Washington tied it up shortly after and took a brief lead in the second inning, VMI responded with a five-run third inning that included four bases-loaded walks. Jenkins added another RBI single later in the game to extend their lead.
Looking ahead, VMI will begin conference play against East Tennessee State this weekend with games scheduled for Friday evening through Sunday afternoon. All games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
