Women's Basketball Falls to Generals on the Road

The Bridgewater College women's basketball team fell to Washington and Lee on the road in ODAC action, 61-55, on Monday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• Washington and Lee got on the board first inside the game's first seconds as the Generals won the tip and immediately scored a lay up from the hands of Grace O'Connor. Nearly two and a half minutes elapsed before the next score as WLU went ahead 4-0 before Reagan Maynard dropped the first basket for the Eagles with under five minutes to go and set the score at 6-2. The home side ended the opening quarter with an 11-3 run but Jasmyn Pierce hit a pair of free throws for the Eagles in the final seconds to end the first 10 minutes with the Generals up 17-7.
• Much like WLU outscoring BC in the first 10 minutes, the Eagles dominated play in the second quarter to get right back in the contest. Maynard stole the ball from Quinn McGuinness to set up an Erika Nettles layup in transition before Rosemary Pierson dropped in a three to make it a five-point game at 17-12 with 8:33 left in the half. Washington and Lee put together a quick run to go up 24-14 off an Eika Prechel trey to set the score at 24-14 with 5:11 remaining in the quarter. The Eagles got to work as India Dailey drained a jumper followed by a driving layup from Abby Branner to kick off an 8-0 run for BC capped by a pair of Nettles free throws to bring Bridgewater within a pair, 24-22, with under 80 second remaining in the first half. Each side added two more point as the Generals took a 26-24 lead into the recess. After going just 1-for-12 from the floor in the first quarter, the Eagles shot 40.0 pct (6-15) in the second period to close in on the home side.
• After the Generals sat in the lead for nearly the entire first 20 minutes of play, the Eagles tied the game to open the second half after a feed from Maynard found Dailey inside for a basket, followed by a second-chance basket by Jaden Alsberry to give BC its first lead of the night at 28-26.  Later in the quarter, a Riley Corcoran layup gave BC a four-point edge at 32-28 before the Generals tied the game at 32-32 with 1:50 left in the third quarter on a step-back jumper from Hanna Malik. The Eagles score six of the last eight points in the third to head to the final 10 minutes with a 38-34 lead.
• The Eagles hit just three baskets in the first six minutes of the final frame as the Generals jumped back in the lead after a 16-6 run through the game's final media timeout as the home side went ahead 50-46 with less than four to play. Bridgewater kept it close as an old fashioned three-point play from Nettles cut the lead down to a pair at 53-51 with under 2:30 left in the game. The Generals worked their lead back out to seven at 58-51 with 1:33 showing on the clock, but the Eagles kept fighting back as basket from Alsberry cut it down to a three-point contest with 30 seconds to play. WLU hit on three of four free throws down the stretch to walk away with a 61-55 victory.
