The VMI baseball team lost to Radford University 9-4 on March 20 in the opening game of their Spring Break series at Sherman Carter Memorial Stadium in Radford, Virginia.

The loss brings VMI’s record to 17-4. The Keydets started strong with a home run by Grayson Fitzwater in the first inning, but a difficult fourth inning allowed Radford to take control of the game and build a lead that VMI could not overcome.

Fitzwater had two runs on two hits, including a triple and a home run, and drove in two runs for the Keydets. Senior Owen Prince also contributed with two runs and two hits, including a double in the eighth inning. For Radford, Brady Powell went three-for-five at the plate with three runs batted in and a double. Devin Parks added two hits and two RBI for the Highlanders, while Noah Toole recorded two hits, two RBI, and scored twice.

Radford took the lead in the fourth inning after Parks hit a home run to center field. A walk brought in another run before Powell’s single drove home two more runners. Eli Hudgins capped off the inning with an RBI double. VMI responded with runs from Bradley Garner and Fitzwater later in the game but could not close the gap as Radford continued to add to their lead.

The teams will continue their series Saturday at 2 p.m., when VMI hosts Radford before returning to Radford for Sunday’s finale at 1 p.m. Saturday’s game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
