VMI Baseball will travel to Arlington, Virginia, to play against George Washington University at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park on March 24. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start and marks the beginning of a five-game road trip for the Keydets.
The matchup features VMI (19-4) taking on the Revolutionaries (8-14) in a midweek contest. VMI has excelled in base running under Head Coach Sam Roberts, leading NCAA Division I with over five steals per game and totaling 119 stolen bases this season. The team also boasts a strong offensive record, ranking top ten nationally in both on-base percentage (.457) and runs per game (9.9), as well as being among the leaders in total runs scored.
Owen Prince stands out for VMI as he approaches the program’s career stolen base record, needing just six more to reach 101. Prince currently leads the team with 21 steals and is fourth nationally; he also leads with 39 runs scored this season. On the pitching side, Hunter Sipe has delivered consistent performances with a 1.20 earned run average across eleven appearances and ranks highly both within his conference and nationally.
Other notable contributors include Cole Raile, who recently went six-for-13 against Radford while extending his hitting streak to eight games; Grayson Fitzwater, whose league-leading walk numbers place him among national leaders; freshman Eli Tyndall’s solid outings on the mound; and Buddy Baker’s undefeated pitching record through nine appearances.
George Washington enters the contest after dropping five straight games but features strengths such as turning double plays—ranking eighth-best nationally—and bullpen stability from Gavin Miller and Colin Lebel. Head Coach Gregg Ritchie is recognized for guiding GW to over twelve consecutive twenty-win seasons during his tenure.
The series between these two programs dates back decades, with recent meetings resulting in split outcomes last year. As Roberts nears his milestone hundredth win as head coach of VMI, all eyes will be on whether the Keydets can maintain their momentum away from home.
