The Virginia Military Institute (VMI) track and field teams will compete at the Electric City Invitational hosted by Anderson University on April 1 and 2 in Anderson, South Carolina. The event marks the second consecutive year that VMI participates in this meet, following a strong showing two weeks ago at the Big South/SoCon Challenge.

This competition is important as both the men’s and women’s teams look to build on their recent successes. The Keydets aim to maintain momentum from their previous performances as they progress through the outdoor season.

In Asheville two weeks prior, Cameron Thomas set a new school record in pole vault with a height of 5.11 meters, surpassing his previous best from last year. Freshman Deonte Harris secured second place in triple jump with a distance of 14.55 meters, while Zachary Denton finished third in long jump at seven meters. On the women’s team, sophomore Naturale Faison won both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes with personal bests of 11.85 seconds and 24.44 seconds respectively, earning her SoCon Women’s Track Athlete of the Week honors.

VMI Director of Track and Field Zack Scott said, “Our men are excited for the opportunity to compete this weekend. We expect them to attack the meet with confidence, continue sharpening their performances and take another step forward as a group. This is an important weekend to compete hard, stay focused on the details, and represent VMI with toughness, discipline and pride.” He added about the women’s team: “This meet is another important opportunity for our women’s team to challenge themselves, continue building momentum, and compete with confidence as we move deeper into the outdoor season. We want them to trust their preparation, support one another, and represent VMI with pride, toughness and discipline.”

The schedule lists several athletes from both teams participating across various events throughout Friday afternoon into Saturday evening.

As VMI enters this phase of its outdoor campaign at Anderson University’s invitational event again this year, all eyes will be on whether recent standout performances can be matched or exceeded.
