VMI track and field teams to compete at Big South-SoCon Challenge in Asheville

The Virginia Military Institute (VMI) track and field teams will return from spring break to participate in the annual Big South-Southern Conference Challenge, scheduled for March 20-21 in Asheville, North Carolina, according to a Mar. 18 announcement.

The event will be held over two days at UNC Asheville’s Karl Straus Track. Saturday’s competitions will be available for viewing on ESPN+, with live results and meet information also provided online.

This year marks VMI’s first appearance as one of three Southern Conference schools selected for the challenge. The participating schools from the Big South Conference include Radford, Winthrop, and UNC Asheville. Representing the Southern Conference alongside VMI are Wofford and Western Carolina.

VMI has announced its roster of cadet-athletes who will compete in various events during the meet. On the men’s side, athletes such as Isaiah Blount (discus and javelin), Colin Crenshaw (2000m steeplechase), Zachary Denton (long jump), Halim Hardnett (100 meters and high jump), Deonte Harris (110m hurdles and triple jump), Rye Jackson (400 meters and 200 meters), Tyrus James (pole vault), Kevin Koumondji (100 meters and 200 meters), Vahin Middough (high jump), Rae Tazewell (discus and shot put), Cameron Thomas (pole vault), Anthony Wilkerson (long jump), and Elisha Williams (shot put and discus) are set to represent the institute.

On the women’s team, Evelyn Anderson is entered in the 400 meters; Ava Buckner will compete in discus and long jump; Genevieve Cummings is slated for discus and high jump; Miracle Eric is entered in the 400 meters; Naturale Faison will run both the 100 meters and 200 meters; Morgan Fraser is listed for high jump; Shea Hart will race in both hurdle events; Jada James is entered in shot put and hammer throw; while JeNiya White is set for both hurdle races.

The competition provides an early test for VMI athletes as they begin their outdoor season against regional rivals.
