The Virginia Military Institute (VMI) Women’s Water Polo team will begin Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play this weekend, starting with a game against Mount St. Mary’s on Friday, March 13, followed by two matches in Philadelphia against La Salle and Marist on Saturday.

This series of games marks the start of VMI’s conference schedule for the season. The team is looking to build momentum after facing tough competition last weekend and aims to improve its standing within the MAAC.

According to the schedule released by the program, VMI will face Mount St. Mary’s at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, with live coverage available on ESPN+. On Saturday, they will play La Salle at 9:00 a.m., followed by a match against nationally ranked No. 17 Marist at 5:00 p.m.

Last weekend, VMI played against two top-20 teams—No. 20 Brown and No. 13 Harvard—scoring a total of 15 goals across both games despite losses in each contest.

Mount St. Mary’s enters the matchup with a record of 5-9 for the season but has recently secured wins over Whittier and Chapman. Historically, VMI holds a 2-4 record in this series, with its last two victories coming at Villanova in 2021.

La Salle currently has a season record of 9-4 and has played one MAAC contest so far—a narrow loss to Villanova. The Explorers have won their last nine meetings against VMI and lead the all-time series between the teams.

Marist stands at No. 17 nationally with an overall record of 17-4 and is undefeated in early conference play at 3-0. The Red Foxes have defeated five nationally ranked teams this year; all four of their losses were to top-20 opponents. VMI’s most recent win over Marist was in 2017.

The outcome of these matches could set the tone for VMI as it continues through its conference schedule.
