The Bridgewater College volleyball team fell 3-0 to Washington and Lee to close out its regular season on Wednesday night in Nininger Hall.
THE BASICS
Final Score: Washington and Lee 3, Bridgewater 0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-17)
Records: Bridgewater 17-11, 9-3 ODAC; Washington and Lee 16-9, 10-2 ODAC
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first set remained tight through the opening 20 points as the score was knotted at 10-10 as each side continued to trade points. Eventually, the Generals stepped up and rallied for five-straight points to take a 20-14 lead forcing a timeout from the Eagles.BC broke the scoreless rally, and battled back to a 22-20 deficit, but ultimately fell in the opening set, 25-22.
- The action was much of the same in the second game of the night as the match was even halfway through the set. This time, Bridgewater went on a quick rally to take a lead in the match, but the Generals bounced back after trailing by three points to take the lead and win the set, 25-22.
- Bridgewater trailed early in the final set as the Generals went up 7-2 to force a BC timeout. The run was broke coming out of the one minute stoppage and the Eagles drew within a pair of points at 10-8. WLU responded by putting up five straight and stretching the lead out to 16-9 and then won seven straight to see the lead grow to 22-13 on its way to a 25-17 set victory to take the match 3-0.
MATCH FACTS
- Prior to the match, the team honored its senior class consisting of Grace Hayes, Ann-Marie Johnson, Sarah Kerns and Lisa O’Grady. The four athletes have helped lead the Eagles to over 60 victories in the last four seasons and saw the ODAC Tournament in each of the three previous years.
- O’Grady led the team with 11 kills on her Senior Night, while Kylie Robinson was next with nine kills of her own. Faith DePew pitched in seven in the loss.
- Hayes paced the Eagles with 29 assists.
- Defensively, Robinson led the team with 12 digs, while Hayes had eight and Sophia Stites, DePew and Ashley Rutherford each had seven in the loss.
- On the nets, Rachael Meyers added to her team lead with five total blocks to sit atop the stat sheet, while Hayes and O’Grady both finished with two block assists.
UP NEXT
Bridgewater finishes the regular season and will await final standings to see who it will play in the first round of the ODAC Tournament on Nov. 2.
