Photographs by Robert Sulkin on Display at Bridgewater College Nov. 7 – Dec. 9

An exhibition of photographs by Robert Sulkin will be showcased at Bridgewater College from Monday, Nov. 7, through Friday, Dec. 9, in the Beverly Perdue Art Gallery located on the main level of the John Kenny Forrer Learning Commons.

Sulkin’s career has spanned photography’s transition from a film-based medium to a digital one, and much of his work incorporates both. For more than 30 years, Sulkin has explored the constructed image in which he uses an array of recycled materials to build sculptural-like models in a studio for the expressed purpose of being photographed.

“In all this work, I attempt to create illusion and thus challenge the believability of photography. More recently, I have been making altered landscapes that I call Earth Poems. These images are highly manipulated and attempt to show due reverence to nature’s beauty and grandness while at the same time suggesting that something has gone awry and climate changes is having its effects,” Sulkin said.

Sulkin lives in Roanoke, Va., and taught photography from 1980 to 2019 at Hollins University, where he was granted Emeritus status. He has participated in more than 200 solo, group and juried exhibitions. In recent years, Sulkin has had exhibitions at Virginia Tech, the Arts Club of Washington, the Peninsula Fine Arts Center and the William King Museum. His work was the subject of the traveling exhibition “Robert Sulkin, photographs 1985-1995″ by the Virginia Museum of Fine Art. In addition, Sulkin has received many awards in juried exhibitions throughout the country including at the Academy of Fine Arts National Juried Photography exhibition and PhotoSpiva. He holds a B.A. in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an M.A. and M.F.A. from the University of Iowa.

The art exhibition will have an opening reception in the gallery from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 7, with an artist’s talk at 5:30 p.m. The exhibition, opening reception and artist’s talk are free and open to the public. The gallery is open from 7:30 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday; 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday; 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday; and noon to midnight on Sunday.
